7/1/2023 0 Comments Sleep vs hibernate on laptops![]() This would keep the laptop on, as the laptop lid was already down, when the dock was disconnected. We like laptops to stay awake when docked and powered.īUT, the issue is that sometimes people close their laptop lid, BEFORE undocking from laptop. There are options to allow laptops, particularly the BIOS, to wake, or keep awake laptops when connected to a docking station. Although there could be two different issues.Īre you able to sleep AFTER disconnecting your laptop from the dock? If your answer is yes, then here is my take. Had a similar issue when transitioning from desktops to laptops. I would play with all the ways to activate sleep (typically start menu, lid, sleep function key, power button) on and off the dock to see if there is a pattern. Your laptop model could have a similar quirk. Since it is already closed that never happens. I assume that the lid needs to change states in order to activate the sleep command. If while docked I just close the lid and then undock it will not sleep. I must start menu sleep or press the power button (set to sleep I assume the sleep function key would work as well) to put it to sleep before closing the lid and then undock. ![]() When docked it doesn't sleep when closing the lid even if it is set in Windows to do that. On my older work laptop when not docked I can just close the lid for it to sleep. I'm not sure if this would show up as an event or not.Īnother thought is that you just say that you put your laptop into sleep mode but don't say how. However, it could be a program that is deliberately preventing sleep (ex: to ensure data write integrity) and never releasing that hold. I doubt that it is a hanging process because even the most stubborn do not hang every time and we would see at least a few events. This means that something either cleared the log, preventing sleep, or not recognizing the sleep command. Justin -Only finding 4 events is a sign in itself as I have 4-8 events per day that I use my laptop. I'm wondering if there are any settings within Windows 11 that could be causing the problem, or if anyone else is having or already dealt with a similar issue with their laptops as well? None of the suggestions they provided ultimately fixed the issue. I was in contact with Dell Support regarding this issue, but since we have the custom OS build, their support on the problem is limited, although they were very responsive to my queries. We are utilizing Windows 11 Enterprise on these systems, and we have a custom build of the OS which we are deploying on these computers. When I powered back on, my battery was already down around 20% as if it had been running normally the entire time.Ī co-worker is having the same issue with his Latitude 9420 as well. ![]() I have noticed that when I try to put my computer into sleep mode when leaving work, the computer does not seem to actually enter sleep mode.Ī few days ago, when I first noticed the issue, I put the computer into sleep mode when I left work for the day, then grabbed my computer out of my bag at home a few hours later and noticed it was warm to the touch. I have a Dell Latitude 9420 2-in-1 laptop which I was issued about three weeks ago which I plug into a docking station at work and also take home some days as well. ![]()
